The Skills System Explained: How Claw Connects to Your Apps

Skills are the integrations that give Claw superpowers. Here's how they work under the hood and what's coming next.

Claw on its own is a smart conversational AI. Skills are what turn it into something that can actually do things in the world. A Skill is an integration — a connection between Claw and an external service that lets Claw read data, take actions, and automate workflows on your behalf.

The architecture is straightforward. Each Skill is a module that exposes a set of capabilities to Claw's reasoning engine. The Gmail Skill, for example, exposes capabilities like 'read emails', 'send email', 'search inbox', 'create draft', and 'manage labels'. When you ask Claw to 'reply to the last email from my lawyer', it identifies that it needs the Gmail Skill, calls the appropriate capability, and handles the rest.

Skills are installed from the Skills Hub — a catalogue of pre-built integrations. Today the catalogue includes Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Sheets, Notion, Slack, Trello, and a growing list of others. Installing a Skill takes about 30 seconds: you click install, authenticate with the service via OAuth, and Claw immediately has access.

Permissions are granular. When you install the Gmail Skill, you choose what Claw is allowed to do — read-only, or read and send. You can revoke access at any time from the Skills Hub or by messaging Claw directly ('remove my Gmail access').

Custom Skills are on the roadmap. If your team uses an internal tool or a niche SaaS product that isn't in the catalogue, you'll be able to define a custom Skill using a simple JSON schema that describes the API endpoints and authentication method. Claw will be able to call it just like any built-in Skill.

The longer-term vision is a Skills ecosystem where third-party developers can publish integrations. Think of it like an app store, but instead of apps you install, you're giving your AI assistant new capabilities. The more Skills Claw has, the more it can do — and the more useful it becomes as a genuine autonomous agent rather than just a chatbot.
