The Real Cost of Running OpenClaw: $0 to $50/Session

OpenClaw is "free" — but users report burning $30–50 in a single session. Here's the full cost breakdown and how to avoid the bill shock.

OpenClaw is marketed as free and open source. And it is — the software itself costs nothing. But running it has real costs that catch many users off guard.

The first cost is infrastructure. OpenClaw requires a server that's always on. Options include a Mac Mini ($600+ upfront), a VPS ($5–20/month), or a cloud instance ($10–50/month depending on specs). OpenClaw's Docker setup requires at least 2GB RAM and 10GB storage, which rules out the cheapest VPS tiers.

The second cost is the AI model. OpenClaw doesn't include an AI model — you bring your own API key. Claude, GPT-4o, and Gemini are the most popular choices. API costs vary by model and usage, but power users report spending $30–50 in a single heavy session. For daily use, $20–100/month in API costs is common.

The third cost is time. Setting up OpenClaw takes 2–8 hours for most users. Ongoing maintenance — updates, debugging, security patches — adds a few hours per month. If your time is worth anything, this is a real cost.

Add it up: $10–20/month for a VPS, $20–100/month in API costs, and several hours of setup and maintenance time. For a power user, OpenClaw can easily cost $50–120/month in cash plus ongoing time investment.

Managed alternatives like Talking Claw bundle the infrastructure and AI model costs into a single subscription. Talking Claw's Pro plan is $19/month — all-in, no API key required, no server to manage. For most users, that's cheaper than running OpenClaw yourself, and dramatically less work.

The 'free' in open source means free to use, not free to run. Factor in the real costs before assuming self-hosted is the cheaper option.
